Marrakech-Menara Airport is the arrival point for almost everyone, roughly 5 km away and about ten to fifteen minutes by taxi or by the airport shuttle the riad can arrange in advance; agreeing a fare or booking the transfer beforehand saves haggling on arrival. Marrakesh train station, with direct services from Casablanca, Rabat and Tangier, is about 2.5 km away, a five-minute taxi ride. The key thing to understand is that the medina's lanes are narrow, walled and largely closed to cars, so a taxi or shuttle will set you down at the nearest vehicle point and the last stretch is on foot; the riad can send someone to meet you and carry bags, which is worth arranging, as the alleys are easy to lose your way in after dark. Local buses stop a few minutes' walk away near Bab Doukkala for trips into the newer Gueliz district.

Further into the old town lie the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and El Badi Palace, an easy taxi hop or a longer wander through the alleys. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons; midsummer is intensely hot, so plan sightseeing for the morning and retreat to the spa or terrace in the afternoon. Wear sturdy shoes for the uneven lanes and carry small change for tips and taxis.
